If you already have an account on impots.gouv.fr (the French tax portal) or on ameli (French national health insurance), you have FranceConnect — whatever your nationality. It lets you sign a document with an advanced signature, with a verified identity, with no prior formalities and at the best price for this level.
What you need
An account with any FranceConnect identity provider: impots.gouv.fr, ameli, Identité Numérique La Poste, the MSA (the agricultural social security scheme), and others, which you will find on the FranceConnect website. There is nothing to create: you log in with the credentials you already use.
Some providers authenticate you directly in the browser; others send you to their mobile app. In that case, keep your phone within reach.
How the signing works
- On 1-signature, you upload your document, place your signature and choose level 3.
- When it is time to sign, you choose your identity provider on the FranceConnect page, and log in to it.
- Your identity is passed on, and the signature is applied.
- You download the signed document and its evidence file.
What FranceConnect gives you
Your identity is not declared, it is supplied by the administration: this is what makes this signature an advanced signature, linked to you in a verifiable way. It is the level that suits most contractual commitments — an employment contract, a lease, a formality that requires an advanced signature.
If the identity does not match
Your name is supplied by FranceConnect. If it does not match the name you declared on 1-signature, the signing stops without using your stars. This is a safeguard: a typo in your name cannot produce a false signature.
Without a FranceConnect account
Level 4 also produces an advanced signature, with a certificate issued in your first and last names and a code received by SMS. But nobody verifies your identity there: the certificate bears the name you typed, exactly as typed. Read it over carefully.
