Which signature level should you choose?

Six levels, from qualified seal to qualified signature. The price of each follows its real cost, and the list reads from top to bottom like a ladder.

Six niveaux, du cachet qualifié à la signature qualifiée. Le prix suit le coût réel de chacun, et la liste se lit de haut en bas comme une échelle.

1

Simple — Email OTP

The integrity and authenticity of the document are protected by a qualified eIDAS electronic seal from Goodflag. Suitable for signing transactions of limited risk and value: INPI (French intellectual property office) formalities requiring a simple signature, invoices, expense claims, etc.

What you need: Nothing more than the email address you have already verified.

1 star

2

Simple — SMS OTP

Same seal and same uses as level 1, but access to the signature is protected by a code received by SMS: the evidence of consent is strengthened.

What you need: A mobile phone able to receive SMS.

3

Advanced — FranceConnect

Advanced signature at the best price. Your identity is provided by FranceConnect (the French state's login service): it is therefore verified, and an input error will stop the signature without using up your stars. Suitable for signing transactions of moderate risk and value: INPI formalities requiring an advanced signature, commercial deeds, employment contracts, property leases, etc.

What you need: An account with any FranceConnect identity provider: impots.gouv.fr (the French tax portal), ameli (French health insurance), etc. Nationality plays no part: anyone who files a tax return in France or is covered by French social security has one. Some authenticate you directly in the browser, others send you to their mobile app: in that case, keep your phone within reach.

4

Advanced — SMS OTP

Same signature and same uses as level 3, notably for INPI formalities. A certificate is issued in your first and last names: the cryptographic signature is legally attached to you, and not merely to the signing journey. Check the spelling of your identity scrupulously: it will not be verified, and a mistake cannot be corrected afterwards.

What you need: A mobile phone able to receive SMS. Warning: nobody verifies your identity at this level — the certificate will be issued in the first and last names you entered, exactly as typed.

5

Qualified — France Identité

The highest level recognised by the eIDAS regulation: the legal equivalent of a handwritten signature. Suitable for signing transactions of high risk and value: private deeds, acknowledgements of debt, bank loans, life insurance contracts, etc. Same price as level 6: choose whichever of the two identities you already have.

What you need: For French nationals only. A credit-card-sized French national identity card, which neither a passport nor a residence permit can replace. It must have been activated in the France Identité app (the French national digital ID app) after certification at a town hall: this is not something you can improvise on the day of signing. When signing, have the card and the smartphone on which the app is installed: you can sign from a computer or on your phone, but your identity is proven on the phone, which reads the card's chip contactlessly.

6

Qualified — Identité Numérique La Poste

A qualified signature available without an electronic identity card, at the cost of enrolling beforehand with La Poste. Same price as level 5: choose whichever of the two identities you already have.

What you need: An Identité Numérique La Poste (La Poste's digital identity), which is free to obtain but requires one of these three documents, currently valid: a French identity card, a French passport, or a residence permit valid for at least five years. A foreign identity document is therefore not enough, but a residence permit makes it available without French nationality. When signing, have the smartphone on which the app is installed and its PIN: you can sign from a computer or on your phone, but your identity is proven on the phone.
